5 Key Points

Ireland needs an energy revolution.

The stakes have never been so high. If oil prices average $150 or even just $85 per barrel this year, the Irish economy will contract by 3% or 2.3% respectively, according to Ernst and Young's most recent analysis. The message is clear: we must cut our exposure to energy price rises, and we must invest in immediate stimulus or face economic ruin. An energy revolution is Ireland's only option. Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures.

At Construct Ireland we're convinced that Ireland can turn this crisis into an opportunity. This is why we've launched Energise Ireland, a campaign to turn Ireland from an economic basket case into a genuinely sustainable, oil-free nation, redesigned to prosper in a changing world. We believe this campaign can offer great hope not only for companies involved in energy efficiency or renewables, but for the entire Irish economy.

It's an understatement to say that this proposal is ambitious. Can Ireland really aim, as we propose, to become an oil-free country by 2025? With recent reports that the International Energy Agency's projections on global oil supply have been hugely overestimated due to political pressure, do we have any choice?

We all have a role to play in Ireland's recovery. By investing in cutting energy wastage, and reducing our dependency on volatile, costly energy imports, we can all help to get Ireland onto a sustainable footing. If you agree with the thinking behind our Energise Ireland campaign, we'd urge you to sign the petition and ask everyone you know to do likewise.
